About the Dual Immersion Program

Dual Immersion is a challenging and rigorous academic program that begins in TK/Kindergarten and continues through the fifth grade. Spanish is the target language of instruction. Students learn Spanish in TK-2 grades and master the Spanish skills to add on the English language skills at third grade and beyond.

Program Goals

The Dual Immersion Program holds an added value of rigor, preparing students for participation in world-class language development from their elementary years and continuing through middle school and Temescal High School's prestigious International Baccalaureate Program and Diploma.

The goals of Railroad Canyon's DI Program are to develop:
  • High levels of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in two languages
  • High academic performance in all content areas
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of cultures
  • Skills in cross cultural communication and a sense of global citizenship
  • The ability to study and communicate across the curriculum in two languages
The diagram below illustrates how language instruction shifts from Spanish immersion to English & Spanish between grades K-5. Language courses are offered in middle school and high school to reinforce a student's Spanish speaking skills, to build Spanish literacy. Once a student reaches the senior year of high school, special honors, such as the state Seal of Biliteracy diploma recognition, may be awarded to students who successfully demonstrate language proficiency.
